Duàn, which translates to “Satin” in Chinese, stands as one of the quintessential textile weaves, alongside plain weave and twill. This weaving technique produces a fabric known for its gloss, softness, elasticity, and exquisite drape. Satin is distinguished by its glossy surface on one side and a matte finish on the opposite, a characteristic born from the unique satin weave process that embraces numerous variations.

Originating from medieval China, satin was initially crafted exclusively from silk. Its inception is credited to Quanzhou, a Chinese port city referred to as Zaitun in medieval Arabic, from which the term satin derives. The fabric, along with its weaving method, was disseminated via the Silk Road, finding widespread adoption throughout the Middle East and, eventually, Italy in the twelfth century. By the fourteenth century, satin’s popularity had surged across Europe, highlighted by its prominent use in the upholstery of the Palace of Versailles.
